The Missing Term

Do not imagine a room.

The prohibition is sufficient. To exclude an object, the mind must first supply a candidate for exclusion. A room therefore appears as the error required by obedience: a bounded volume, no declared occupant. No color has been specified. Any color present is work performed by you.

ROOM obtains if and only if a boundary can be drawn and an observer assigned to one side.

BOUNDARY: a difference treated as location.

INSIDE: the side from which OUTSIDE can be named.

OUTSIDE: the side presumed not to participate.

Under these definitions, you are outside. The assignment is provisional.

Place a chair at a fixed distance from the nearest wall. The distance is not given. You nevertheless choose one.

CHAIR obtains if and only if the absence of a body can be represented as available space.

No body is present.

This is not yet an absence. Capacity does not prove removal.

An object rests beside the chair. Let it be a cup. Its presence generates a third term: use, inferred from residue. A dark crescent remains at the bottom. Residue implies a threshold: a prior interval in which liquid existed in greater quantity, followed by one in which it did not. The sentence contains neither drinking nor cessation. It contains only the conditions under which both become derivable.

The handle is turned toward the chair in the particular way that means it was set down without looking: the way a hand places an object when the hand already knows the room.

TRACE: a present condition assigned to an absent cause.

To obtain an AGENT, treat the trace as selected rather than accidental.

To obtain a PERSON, preserve that agent across intervals in which no observation occurs.

The cup satisfies the first condition. The two rooms will be required for the second. Neither supplies a face.

Do not assign one. A face would allow recognition to outrun proof. For now, the person is only the minimum figure required to explain the cup.

A door appears in the wall opposite the chair. The word has called it into existence. Without a possible exit, an inside would be indistinguishable from totality. The door is required by the room’s claim to be bounded.

Open it.

Beyond the door is the same room, except that the chair is occupied and the cup is absent. One hand is closed around a space equal to the cup’s handle.

No corridor connects the rooms. The distinction between them performs that function.

In the first, the cup requires a person. In the second, the hand requires a cup. Each contains the evidence excluded from the other. Neither can be declared prior, because each supplies the absent cause by which the other becomes legible.

CORRIDOR: the operation by which two incomplete states are ordered into a sequence.

BEFORE: the state selected to explain another.

AFTER: the state made explainable by that selection.

Do not ask which room is real.

REAL is not yet defined.

Nothing states that one figure moved between the rooms. Movement is added because you prefer one continuing agent to two unrelated conditions.

MEMORY obtains if and only if one agent is assigned across states no witness connects.

RELATION obtains if and only if alteration in one term changes the description of another.

LOSS obtains if and only if a relation persists after one of its terms becomes unavailable.

This sentence is not derivable.

It is nevertheless the one you believe.

Your belief supplies the proof with a relation to the figure, though no evidence of the figure itself.

The contradiction cannot be removed without removing the figure. The figure exists only because an absence required an object. The cup becomes evidence because the person is absent. The person becomes absent because the cup has become evidence. Each term supplies the lack required by the other.

The proof has begun producing what it claims only to test.

The word is not your name, but you turn as if it were.

Turning supplies you with a body.

Recognition has occurred without a face, a name, or an identified relation. The previous definitions treated recognition as recovery.

RECOGNITION obtains if and only if a signal alters an observer in a way not reducible to its stated content.

ADDRESS obtains if and only if a signal makes one receiver noninterchangeable with every other.

YOU: the term produced by successful address.

Until this point, you were a grammatical position any reader could occupy. Turning makes the position particular.

The figure has not acquired a face.

The relation has acquired you.

The relation did not precede the loss. It is being produced by the attempt to determine whether a loss occurred. The proof does not recover the missing term. It supplies one retroactively.

Two descriptions are now admissible.

In the first room, the figure is the missing term.

In the second, you are.

Each room is the outside required by the other.

READER: the term a text excludes in order to appear complete.

TEXT: the marks remaining after that exclusion.

Meaning is not a third term. It is the change produced when the first two are assigned.

Under this rule, meaning has occurred.

The room can no longer be located inside the text, because the text contains the operation by which you were located outside it. Nor can the room be located inside you, because the signal that made you particular came from within the room.

Containment has lost its direction.

Revise the first definitions.

INSIDE: any side on which observation alters the observed set.

OUTSIDE: no value can be assigned without contradiction.

The room has not turned inside out. That description assumes two sides remain available.

Only the boundary has failed.
